A Chicory Inn Novel – Two Roads Home

two roads home

Do you enjoy American movies about big, cozy families celebrating Christmas together and having barbecues? Chicory Inn Novel – Two Roads Home by Deborah Raney could easily be adapted into such a film!

Two Roads Home is a warm, comforting book about an American family.

What Two Roads Home is about

Two Roads Home is the second book in the Chicory Inn series, set around the Chicory Inn—a bed & breakfast started by Audrey and her husband after their three daughters left home. Every Tuesday evening, the entire family gathers there to share a meal together.

Stay at home mom Corinne and Jesse

This second book in the series focuses on Corinne. She is a stay-at-home mom, while her attractive husband Jesse earns the family’s income. But when a female colleague accuses Jesse of unwanted sexual advances, tension arises between Corinne and Jesse.

Choosing a different life

At the same time, it awakens something in Jesse that has long been dormant: dissatisfaction with his demanding, high-pressure job. He wants to become a teacher instead—but this would mean a significant drop in income. Can Corinne still remain a stay-at-home mom? Ultimately, they decide to take a step back and swap houses with Corinne’s sister. However, seeing her sister in her beloved home is painful for Corinne.

About Two Roads Home

When you open this book, you immediately encounter a Bible quote. Two Roads Home is a Christian book, although the religious aspect is subtle. So if you’re not a fan of religious books, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Overall, the story isn’t particularly gripping. It meanders a bit—but that’s okay, because it’s a cozy read. There’s just enough tension to keep the reader interested, such as potential conflicts between Corinne and her sister. I think Deborah Raney is saving the full development of these conflicts for future books. That said, I sometimes found the characters inconsistent, and Corinne herself can be a bit annoying—for example, when she struggles to fully believe in her husband Jesse’s innocence.

Summing up

Two Roads Home is a feel-good novel that doesn’t demand much from the reader. It’s a perfect holiday read. I would rate this book 6.5/10, mainly for its warm and cozy atmosphere.
